Geocache Description:

I found this beauty lurking in the middle of my garden one night
and it was the inspiration for this cache.
Anyway, enough of the fluffy stuff. Let's get cracking!

You will be making an origami toad which will serve as your signed log sheet.

Start by downloading and printing out the PDF to the right.

It is safe for download and free of viruses but unchecked by Groundspeak or the reviewer.

The toad obviously looks better in colour but is not essential.

Extra points are awarded for creativity.

Make sure you print it at 100% and that your resultant square is 210mm x 210mm. Cut out the square and make a "square base".

It is reasonably easy to make and consists of vertical and horizontal mountain folds...

Followed by two diagonal valley folds.

Now it is easy to collapse the piece of paper along the fold lines to make your square base.

Now insert your finger in one of the pockets of the square base. From the picture above I have taken the one on the left with the rectangle where you must sign and moved it round to the front.

Flatten and crease the pocket. This classic origami move is known as a squash fold.

The photo below shows the completed squash fold. Now perform the squash fold three more times.

The piece will now have the diamond shape shown below.

Fold and unfold the corners shown below to make crease marks.

Here comes the most challenging part of the construction... The classic petal fold. You might want to make a cup of tea or pour yourself a stiff drink (on second thoughts keep that until afterwards) whilst you take a look at the next couple of pictures. Start by lifting the flap up and making a horizontal crease.

Continue to move the flap up towards the signature rectangle and at the same time bringing the edges together by flattening and almost rolling and eventually flattening the top creases.

The photo below shows the completed petal fold.

Now perform the petal fold three more times (on the other three faces of the diamond) to create the origami toad base. Well done! You have completed the trickiest part.

The steps from now to the completed leopard toad require absolute precision to ensure the coordinates end up on the bits of anatomy. Fold the toad base down the centreline as shown.

Take the edge (shown by the tip of the paint brush) and fold it into the centre. Do the same on the left-hand side.

The photo below shows the two folds that have been completed.

Perform the folds on the three other sides of the toad base until you are left with the shape below.

Now it is time to turn this tadpole into a toad.

I like to pre-crease the leg and then use reverse folds to make the two front legs. Below is the front horizonal fold of the leg up to the right...

and now it is reversed underneath. Notice how it is in line with the body.

The same procedure is carried out in the front left leg.

Now use reverse folds to stretch the back legs. Look closely at shadow on the back right leg in the picture below. Notice how the middle of the leg folds 90 degrees in on itself. You will be using this fold a few times on the legs.

Apply reverse folds again, twice each on the front and back pairs of legs as shown in the pictures below.

Here is the toad with both sets of reverse folds completed.

Congratulations you have completed all the folds. All that remains is for you write you geocaching handle if you have not already done so. All that remains is to blow in the back of the toad between the two rear legs whilst pushing the front and sides slightly to puff him up.

Excellent work! Now read the coordinates off the toad and whack into the geochecker below.
Remember to drop the completed toad into the cache container.
