Geocache Description:

SDSQ = South Dakota Spirit Quest. It is a heading used on many caches in other states that deal with Cemeteries. This cache is placed with utmost respect for the area.

Little Dane Cemetery was consecrated in 1887, 2 years before the church was built. It is located near the small community of Saint Onge, in Lawrence County South Dakota. There are approximately 190 internments here.

During the late 1880's, Danish residents in the area formed a congregation and church, then called the Scandinavian Evangelical Lutheran Church. At first they didn't have a place to meet, so they met either in local homes, or at the Asbury School building about a mile south of here, where we have another cache, GC3BQBN.  In early 1889, they began construction on the church building that sits on the cemetery grounds. It was completed later that year. The name was changed to the Little Dane Church, mostly because of the Danish ancestry of the congregation.

The last service was held in 1929 after a hailstorm knocked all the windows out, and the stock market fell. The church disbanded, as most of the congregation had no money due to the depression.

Then on Oct 05, 1969, which was the 80th anniversary of the building of the church, descendents of the first congregation dedicated a newly restored church. A Memorial Day service has been conducted annually in thankfulness for the faith those who settled here. All burials in the cemetery can be traced directly back to these early pioneers. The only people that can be buried here today are descendents of those original parishioners and plot holders.

You do not have to enter the cemetery grounds to find the cache. If a service is in progress, or if there is someone here maintaining a grave site, please come back at a later time. If you do chose to visit the cemetery, please pay due respect and do not disturb any of the markers or headstones. Follow any and all posted cemetery regulations. Most importantly, do NOT look for this cache after dark.

You are looking for a camo'd bison tube. Bring your own writing stick as there isn't one in the cache. Please return the cache exactly as found, making sure it remains well-hidden.

As with all of our caches, enjoy the area, be safe and have fun.
