Geocache Description:

!! Attention !! It has been reported in a log that a cacher was stung at this location after looking behind a sign. This cache is not behind a sign. It is under a rock on top of the wall, please do not manipulate any signage and please be aware of any possibility of disturbing stinging insects.

We found this little spot quite by accident. We had seen the tower from highway 72 earlier in the day, and then as we were heading out to grab a cache in a nearby cemetery we passed even closer to the tower.

Russellville Road

Soon we passed a gate in the rock wall with a sign mounted on it on one side and a standing hare guarding it from atop the gate column on the other. A small family cemetery lay adjacent to it. We couldn't read the sign because I was driving to fast for it, but, enchanted, we resolved to slow down and see what it said on the return.

We made our way to the cemetery we were originally seeking and quickly found the cache near a stately old oak, then turned around to explore our new discovery.

As we approached the gate I slowed and the bright inviting sign rolled into view while the old rock wall continued on to disappear at the infinity point somewhere before Russellville Road meets highway 72.

In part the sign read "When the Gate is open, Welcome"

Driving up the dirt drive we were uncertain, because this seemed to be a residence, not a park or a business, but we saw another sign that read "open", and we continued.

We shortly encountered the property owners and they did indeed genuinely welcome us. As we talked I mentioned geocaching while explaining how we came to be there and Judy thought is sounded like a wonderful adventure.

I asked if they would like to have a cache on their property and they thought that was a grand idea. They even walked back out to the road to help to select the hiding spot and conceal the container.

You do not have to enter the property to retrieve the cache. It is on the rock wall near the gate. If the gate is open, however, you are welcome to come in and park inside, and to meet with the owners who are some of the nicest people you will talk to all day long.

While talking to the couple who own the property we learned that the cemetery next to the property is Russell Cemetery. There interred you will find one Theodore Pease Russell, who born in 1820, came with his parents and siblings in 1839 from Connecticut to the Arcadia Valley.

Among other things Mr. Russell served as a Justice of the Peace, was a civilian in attendance at the Battle of Pilot Knob at nearby Fort Davidson, and wrote hundreds of articles as 'TPR' in his 'Old Time' column in the Iron County Register from 1883 to 1898. in this column he wrote of life and his experiences in Arcadia valley, presenting a living history for the younger people in the area. He wrote of such varied subjects as hunting trips and first hand accounts of civil war battles and the 2,000 plus member division of Native Americans who came through the area as part of the Trail of Tears.

From this column is taken the text of the narration presented at the Fort Davidson Historic Site in their moving account of the Battle of Pilot Knob. We have placed a cache at that location as well — The Battle of Pilot Knob

Russellville Road

Please do not hunt this cache at night.,/p>

The rocks that hide the cache are loose and require no force at all to move. They are on top of the wall. Please return all rocks to the same position in which you found them and fully conceal the container. The owner very much wants the container to not be visible to passers by.
