Geocache Description:

Medium sized container covered in black dress. A geo coin awaits the FTF.

The American Buffalo is the Kansas State Animal. This is cache #3 in a series of 27 caches honoring the Kansas and Nebraska state symbols along State Line Road.

The Bison Bison Bison (yes, that is really the "scientific" name for the Plains Bison), has been the state animal for Kansas since 1955. The only surviving natural population of Plain Bison is in Yellowstone National Park. There are about 3000 bison in that heard. Bison were a very important animal for the plains tribes. They ate the meat, fat and organs. Used the bones for arrow points, awls, beads, berry pounders, hide scrapers, hoes, and needles. The horns were used to make spoons, from the sinew they would make bow strings and thread. Using the bladder for waterproof containers, and the tail for paint brushes. Grease from the fat was used as cooking oil. The skulls were used as altars in ceremonies. Raw hide was used for parfleches, which were satchels they used to put meat into, shield covers and moccasin soles. Hides with fur were used for blankets, wraps and warm clothing. Tanned hides were used in clothing, calendars, teepee covers, and art work.

At one time there were 25 million bison across North America, but by the 1980's there were less then 600. They were mostly in private herds, with a small herd of 30 in the area that is now yellowstone park. It was once the offical policy of the United States government to minimize or eliminate the bison, and most farmers and ranchers considered them a pest or nuisance. Some individual land owners who were concerned about the demise of the animal formed groups like the American Bison Society were formed to save the animal with the idea of saving the species and reintroducing them to at least part of thier natural range.
