Kirk: Captain's log stardate 8359... We are once again traveling back in time via a slingshot maneuver around the sun. A cloaked Klingon Bird-of-Prey has secretly followed the Enterprise into a collapsing orbit around the moon, apparently very early in the 21st century. As the Klingon ship uncloaked, it was detected by our Science Officer Mr. Spock with the ship's sensors. I have placed the ship on red alert...
Spock: Captain, I’m reading faint transmissions from a small scout ship leaving the planet's surface, apparently directed to the Bird-Of-Prey.
Uhura: The language does sound like Klingon Captain but the transmission is barely audible.
Kirk: Uhura, analyze and translate if possible.
Uhura: Yes Captain...
Yes, it’s definitely Klingon Captain! I can make out most of it… “Transceiver planted successfully… prescribed coordinates... NASA… awaiting activation“ - then there are two sequences of mostly numbers... the rest is too distorted to analyze.
NASA, Captain?
Kirk: Yes Lieutenant, the old earth space program. Spock, wasn't NASA's early space exploration defunded about this time?
Spock: Yes Captain, after the Space Launch System program used to develop human-rated heavy lift vehicles was abandoned in mid 2015. It wasn't until the resurgence through the Reagan Rocketry Program instituted by Vice President Manchin in 2021 that interplanetary travel had it's birth...
Kirk: Sulu, can we pinpoint the scout ships trajectory to its origin?
Sulu: Negative Captain, the ion trail has faded too much for reconstruction. The closest we can get is the area of north central West Virginia.
Spock: A logical target... A region of much federal growth at the time...
Hmmmm. Most interesting...
Kirk: Analysis Mr. Spock?
Spock: I would speculate that the Klingons have in fact succeeded in planting some type of stealth listening device in a close enough proximity to a NASA building communications systems to enable them to infiltrate it and ultimately coordinate an invasion - virtually undetected.
Kirk: Is there anyway we can possibly intercept them in time?
Spock: Not until Mr. Scott has made the necessary repairs to the warp drive will we be able to-
Kirk: Engineering, damage report...
How long until we have warp capability?
Scotty: Ach! Cap’n it’s a mess down ‘ere and I don’ have the men ta do it right either. Transporter is down, power for shields are available but we haven't got enough for weapons... That jump drained the dilithium crystals a might. If we push, it may leave us with just life support. It’s gon’ a be a wee bit longer, I'm doin' the best I ken!
Kirk: Scotty! I need those engines now man!
Spock, what can we do? We can’t just sit here and let the Klingons march right into NASA and take over the earth…
Spock: May I make a suggestion Captain? Broadcast the recorded transmission of these coordinates from the ship's comm link toward earth; surely someone will pick up the signal, translate them properly and intercept the device, what ever it may be, in time to stop the Klingon invasion.
Kirk: What are the chances of that hap-
Spock: 2,487,243.6 to 1 if I've calculated it properly, which I have.
Kirk: Point, six, Mr. Spock? Well, thank you... But really; what would we even tell them to look for down there?
Spock: Logically, the transceiver would look quite alien... however, the Klingons are legendary for their deception… the device could look like almost anything Captain. Flora, fauna, turn of the century electronics devices... something as simple as a magnetic hide-a-key perhaps. The possibilities are vast.
Kirk: Uhura, full power broadcast, narrow band, directed at earth; Concentrate on the region of northeastern United States. Send immediately, all known earth frequencies for this time. We have got to stop this thing!
Uhura: Yes Sir, sending transmission now...
Kirk: SCOTTY! Get that power back man!
