Virginia Lake Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Bodoni: The cache is indeed gone, along with all of the lower branches of the tree. I don't know what kind of pruning technique they call what they did to the tree, but the blackberries are sure liking the extra light they're getting now. I looked all over and think the cache is gone vs moved. Thanks to all who did the cache!

Geocache Description:

Park at N 45° 39.615 W 122° 50.318 and you will not need a parking permit. If you park elsewhere on the island you may very well need a permit, but you do not if you are just parking at this spot. You'll know what I mean soon after you cross the bridge. This area is only open during daylight hours (changes with the season).

The cache is located just over half a mile from the parking down a well-maintained, fairly level trail. The trail circles a seasonal lake with plenty of wildlife, nice scenery, and vegetation that varies on either side of the lake. Start at the parking lot and proceed down the nice wide path by the Day Use Only sign. Your GPS will mislead you at this point. When you reach the Waypoint you'll have a choice -- left or right. Right will take you the rest of the way to the cache, but left will take you around the lake and you'll still arrive at the cache. The hike around the lake is only about two miles, and well worth it. Either way you go, I suggest you complete the tour around the lake. At the southern end of the lake is a viewing blind for wildlife watching.

The final cache hunt is off of the path, but you'll only need to cross grasslands. If blackberries impede your path, you're off course. Update on 7/22/06: The blackberries are beginning to close in on the final cache location. Please be gentle with the cache -- it is fairly well camouflaged but I suspect it'll be fragile. The cache is pretty large but due to its shape a CD will not fit.

The original version of this cache had you research some questions, so I thought I'd leave the answers and hints here in case you tried to find it and couldn't:

What Portland island used to be known as Wapato Island?

Answer: Sauvie Island

That island used to be inhabited by a tribe of the Chinook Indians. What is the name of that tribe?

Answer: Multnomah

The island has a unique beach on it. What is so unique about the beach (two word answer)?

Answer: The beach is clothing optional

Here are the coordinates you'll need:

Parking: N 45° 39.615 W 122° 50.318

Waypoint: N 45° 39.610 W 122° 50.528

Cache: N 45° 39.925 W 122° 50.966

I hope you have fun!

Additional Hints (Decrypt)

[These hints no longer need encryption. Hint # 1: The name of the tribe is the same as the county that encompasses most, but not the entire island. Hint # 2: What is unique about Collins Beach?]
