On September 16th, 1893, over 100,000 men, women, and children were lined up in cities and towns that dotted the Kansas-Oklahoma border. At exactly 12:00 noon on that day, a pistol shot was fired in each town, beginning the last great land run to ever be held in the United States. It was the Cherokee Strip Land Run, with roughly 8,000,000 acres of land ready for the taking. These people fought their way to claim, civilize, and prosper in a new land.
This Geocache series comprises 18 Geocaches that have been placed along the Kansas-Oklahoma border. #1 is placed just South of Arkansas City, which had the largest amount of runners participating. You will follow the runners' path along the border to South of Caldwell, Kansas. This is the rough half-way point of the run. Be sure to look on the cover of each log for a historical fact about the land run. I hope that this will further convey the meaning of the history of the area which you are geocaching on.
These caches are all placed off of State Line Road. It is well-maintained in some spots, and not so much in others. Heavy rains could limit accessibility. Please replace all of the containers back how you found them, and please make sure the lids are all secured tightly.
Please be safe and enjoy the memorial series!
