Greatland Reviewer: Hello:

This cache page has been archived due to the lack of response to one or more prior Reviewer Note(s) about issue(s) with the cache. If the owner would like to have the cache unarchived, please contact me through my profile as soon as possible before another cache gets placed nearby.

Geocache Description:

This cache is located on the edge of the Glory Hole, an open pit / daylight part of the historical Treadwell Mining complex.  The mine flooded in 1917 and was abandoned.  Most of the glory hole now resembles a lake as it is filled with water.  This cache is near the edge of the south side of the south glory hole.  This is an easy to find cache but the terrain is a bit difficult.

To get to the cache you can start at the Historic Treadwell Trailhead, which is waypoint T1.  This trailhead is at the end of St. Ann's Avenue in Douglas, Alaska.  The second waypoint is where you leave the trail and head into the woods, R1!  You can find alternate paths but this is a good way to go from the several times we've been up here. This route starts at a small ravine area where an old water pipe crosses. You'll need to cross the ravine from north to south near the end (where it heads down into the glory hole).  After crossing there are small trails / routes through the brush around the glory hole.  You'll need to bushwack through some devil's club so bring a stick or long sleeves and pants!

The Cache should be close to the listed coordinates and is located near the ground, within 20 feet of the edge of the glory hole and less than 10 feet off the trail.  We have identical twins in the group so they found a hiding place which somewhat mimics their own biological history.  The cache is an ammo box.

Be careful hiking as the trail goes for some distance along the glory hole, and there are several locations with significant drops or slide areas.  Near the cache you will go around a small glory hole at the bottom of a large pit that is not filled with water and looks to go far into the earth.
