Geocache Description:

Welcome to Dewey, South Dakota.

Dewey was originally called "S and G Ranch" for its owners Sturgis and Goodell. It is located in the southwest corner of Custer County, less than a mile from the Wyoming border. The name was changed in 1890 by either the Burlington Railroad which came through the area that year, or the Post Office Department. The town is a populated place ("a place or area having clustered or scattered buildings and a permanent population") that is not a census designated or incorporated place with an official federally recognized name. There are approximately five or six homes in Dewey, and the current estimated population, according to the sign, is 7. Dewey has a volunteer fire department, defined within the Edgemont city district.

Dewey was a cattle town in the first half of the 20th century. Local ranchers used its rail depot to ship cattle to market. It was a busy shipping and commercial center for the western Black Hills.

To get to the cache, the best bet is to turn south on Dewey Rd off of US 16 and travel almost exactly 20 miles. It is quite a drive, one that takes you on a gravel road through wooded hills, prairie lands, and interesting colorful canyons.

The cache is not located within the town boundaries, but is a short distance away as you approach on Dewey Road from the east.  You are looking for a micro stuck into a very obvious location. You may need a TOTT to extract the cache. Feel free to drive around and look at the remains of this town, but stay on the streets and don't trespass onto private property.

As with all of our caches, enjoy the area, be safe, and have fun.
