Geocache Description:

Glenfield station was opened in the late 19th century as part of the Paisley and Barrhead district railway. However the line was never used for passengers. By the 1960's the line was closed down as the need for cargo operations was no longer there. Recently part of the line has been converted into a cycle path, but if observerd carefully, many parts of the old infrastructure can still be seen.

Most locals are unaware that there ever was a train station here, and that the entire platform of the station is still in excellent repair. The platform is situated in a small forest between Glenburn Road and Glenfield road.

For more information on this line see the wiki page :-

or the following site which has an excellent and thorough history of the entire paisley and barrhead railway and includes some excellent photos.

some info about the cache itself. The container is a small plastic clic box, which theoretically is water proof!  There are a few different ways of finding the platform.  It is possible to access directly from glenburn road. Looks for some slightly cleared pathways from the mainroad (across from the bus shelter and downhill slightly). From this way you will have to scramble up slightly to the platform. It is also possible to access via some official footpaths which are found when climbing the stairs and walking towards glenfield road. You can find the footpaths on the left hand side.  Be careful of nettles and it might be best to wear some sturdy clothing.

Update 03.09.2013 : I have been contacted by a member of the Glenfield Station Woodland Group to provide some important information about this area. This group work together in order to preserve this piece of history. It should be pointed out that the hills around the platform are a landslip risk and it is requested that you proceed with extreme caution! Please be as careful as possible. It would be advisable to attempt the cache only during fair weather.

Update 29.05.2015 : A new cache has been placed, however I could not find the old one. Either it is gone or has been seriously mislaid by a cacher! New cache is a plastic box contained withing a green plastic bag for added protection and camo!
