Many factory employees once lived and worked in the area southeast of the crater rim and many foundations of houses and offices, and machines can still be seen among the bushes. After climbing to the top of the crater rim, the trail crosses the wagon road, which descends into the crater, and reaches a concrete pyramid, one of a number of survey beacons at Tswaing.
The leases to the farm Zoutpan expired in 1950 and although the mining lease was extended, the other was not, because the Department of Agriculture wanted Zoutpan on order to develop and experimental farm for research on improving cattle breeding. However, provision still had to be made for the continued production of soda and salt. This resulted in the entire farm being resurveyed and subdivided into separate areas in 1953. The boundaries were marked by various beacons, including this one. The inscription ZO stands for Zoutpan.
PLEASE NOTE: There is a small entrance fee of R20.00 per person payable if you enter the Tswaing Meteorite Crater.
