Geocache Description:

The puzzleway is a series of puzzle caches of increasing difficulty placed along the Royal Canal Way, between locks 10 and 11. The cache is not at the posted coordinates. In order to find the cache, you will have to solve a puzzle.

This cache likes to keep its coordinates secret, but you will note that it has hidden some clues in other geocaches all over the world. Luckily you will be able to find them from the comfort of your own home, but with over two million geocaches out there, where to start looking? All I can tell you is that the caches follow a theme. There are two ways of finding them, one is long and nice, the other one is smart and naughty. You choose.

The area: The Royal Canal

The Royal Canal is a canal originally built for freight and passenger transportation from the River Liffey to Longford. Work began on the construction of the Royal Canal, to connect Dublin with the upper River Shannon in 1790, and the canal was completed in 1817. It fell into disrepair in the late 20th century, but much of it has since been restored for navigation. The canal passes through Maynooth, Kilcock, Enfield, Mullingar, Ballymahon and Longford. The total length of the main navigation is 145 km, and the system has 46 locks. The Royal Canal Way is a long-distance trail that follows the towpath of the canal from Ashtown, Dublin to Cloondara, County Longford. It is typically completed in 3 days. Apart from the linear cordon of countryside the route provides, there are a number of significant examples of late-18th century industrial archaeology to admire along the way, including the Ryewater Aqueduct which takes the canal high over the Rye river.

Practical notes

This section of the Royal Canal Way is a dirt path which should be stroller accessible when dry. All of the caches except #4 are reachable from the path and none of them are placed on the water side. Please watch children and pets very carefully near the water.

The path is not accessible from the south. You will not be able to reach it if you park at the Navan Road Parkway train station (formerly Phoenix Park station). You can access it from the west, past the 11th lock, or from the east at the Ashtown train station. I recommend the latter since it’s a really nice walk on a sunny day, and there is parking available at the nearby commercial area.
