Bulgan Mountain is revered by Mongolian Buddhists as a 'holy mountain', as it is very significant in the history of Buddhism in this country. Many Mongols travel from around the country to visit this mountain and pay homage, particularly on such celebrations as the birthday of the Dalai Lama, or at Tsagaan Sar, the lunar new year celebrations. On such occasions, the mountain will often be festooned with hundreds of candles, making it a magical experience to witness. The recommended route to the top of the mountain is via a route a couple of hundred metres ot the left of the statue of Buddha and temple, as you face the mountain. It is an energetic climb of maybe 350m elevation, but is not technically difficult or dangerous. Above the cache is a slightly exposed climb to the ultimate summit if you are one who needs to reach that highest point. From many points on the climb you can see magnificent views over the town, and beyond to the Khangai range which is snow capped for much of the year, though not usually in the height of summer! Happy climbing!
