“An Unexpected Party”
- the first chapter from one of my favorite books, J.R.R. Tolkien's classic, The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, better known as The Hobbit, first published in 1937.
In this chapter, Hobbits are introduced, and Bilbo Baggins receives a visit from the wizard Gandalf. The next day, Gandalf returns with thirteen Dwarves. After eating, they discuss the recovery of the treasure that the dragon, Smaug took from Erebor, and Bilbo is hired as their "burglar," despite his protests.
Note: If you haven't read The Hobbit, you MUST - especially if you are a geocacher ( an adventurer at heart.) Check it out from the library today!

Cliff Cave Branch of Saint Louis County Library opened in 1980 and has been serving the Oakville community well.
Personal aside (Memories near cache location) :
The location of the library was primarily woods back in 1960, when my dad built our house across the street, using plans from a 1958 Better Homes and Gardens magazine.
In front of our house, on two-lane Telegraph Road, a small sign read “Oakville”. The school bus picked up my older brother and me for what was often a 45 minute ride to Point School. A few years later, my younger brother attended the new Wohlwend Elementary. I have many fond memories of growing up together with my family in that house, which later became a Tai-Kwon-Do school, and currently is a flooring store.
The community has grown tremendously over the years, but the residents are still down-to-earth, hard-working, God-fearing people and Oakville is still a great place to live.
