Kootenai: At one time Kootenai was the area's Metropolis--it was larger, contained more businesses and was more populated than Sandpoint. In 1907 or 1908 a fire swept through the Kootenai area, destroying homes and businesses.
With the population of approximately 1000 residents consisting of businessmen, loggers, cedar-makers, teamsters, farmers and their families. There were General Merchandise stores, Supply Stores, Saloons, Livery Stables and a Blacksmith shop.
In 1880 the Northern Pacific Railroad was surveyed and started. The town had a newspaper, the Kootenai Herald (printed in Bonner's Ferry) and after the railroad was completed in 1892, the town was nearly abandoned as people moved north to Bonner's Ferry.
Eventually Sandpoint grew and Kootenai dwindled as a major city; rich in history -- this being a very small part.
