Yes...you might think we're having a laugh here...of course we are, caching should be fun too!
You can see Uranus... cache No12 of our Welsh Solar System Series on the opposite hillside above the roads...look for the Rowan tree on the rocky outcrop!
But on a serious note... with the Elan Valley having such dark skies, you could actually see the Planet Uranus with the naked eye when it is at opposition!
To get to the cache from the Picnic area proceed along the lane towards the farm, crossing the bridge below the Claerwen Dam.
Go through two gateways at the farm entrance and follow the fence line uphill from behind the small stone building... see photo. At the top of the field go through the right hand 'silver' metal gate which leads you out onto the open access land Waypoint Trailhead 1.
Follow the track along the hillside above the river to GZ.
Enjoy reading some Astro Jokes from the book in the cache as you sign the log...adding a joke of your own perhaps;)
Below GZ the Afon Arban flows down from the Tywi Forest. As you can see from the photos, there are some nice places to sit for a picnic and paddle on a hot day just below GZ!
DO take care near and in the river, as the rocks are VERY slippery, especially on the river bed!
A nice circular 3 cache walk can be done collecting this cache, the Joint Bonus Cache Dam It! End of the Mt Road (GC3KZJ0) and our cache No 12 Welsh Solar System ~ Uranus (GC3PA5C)
Follow the above instructions to find this cache. Then you'd best walk further 'upstream' to avoid the steep rocky hillside above GZ. Break away from the stream to follow your arrow towards (GC3KZJ0) and the top of Craig Cwplau where you'll get some great views of the Claerwen Reservoir and Dam.
Drop down to find the Bonus Cache and then follow the track towards the Dam and cross.
Follow the lane downhill, then break off and 'contour walk' along sheep tracks to our Uranus cache.
Rejoin the lane and follow down to the junction and turn right towards the Picnic Area Parking near the base of the Dam.
