For my silver award project, I worked with 3 other girls: Drew, Niki, and Mackenzie. The theme for our project was Animal Welfare. We each focused on different aspects of the project. Drew created a pet friendly hiking trail on Prospect Point. The point of the trail was to make people aware of the importance of health and happiness to animals. Drew made this trail possible through fundraisers and many meetings with the mayor for his permission to help make it happen. Niki held an adoption day on October 20th, 2012. She held the adoption day to raise awareness of the many animals that are in need of a home. On the adoption day, 2 dogs were adopted. Mackenzie worked on teaching young kids and adolescences how to properly take care of animals to decrease the amount of animal abuse in the near future. She held Girl Scout try-its with Daisy and Brownie troops. In each try-it, Mackenzie created games and fun crafts to teach the children how to properly take care of animals. I focused on educating people the importance and benefits of fostering. Fostering is important because someone can bring an animal from a shelter, bring it home, give it love and affection, train it, and give the animal a permanent home. Fostering reduces the number of animals in shelters - whether it’s a local pound or a high kill shelter. I raised awareness of fostering by holding a pet friendly geo-caching event at Prospect Point trail. For this cache, the box is filled with information on fostering and a local shelter we worked with on the project, 11th Hour Animal Rescue.
