Geocache Description:

When: October 26, 2013 12PM to 3PM
Where: Meat - A Carnivore's Playground, 212 Lacey Road, Forked River, NJ 08731

Welcome to the 2nd Travel Bug Race! The last one was quite sucessful, so I am going to organize another race. The race will begin on October 26, 2013 and end on April 26, 2014 - exactly six months. And like last time, this is not a race for distance - it is a race for points. I will host another event at the end of the race to congratulate the winners and recognize those who participated.

This is a race to see whose Travel Bug can accumulate the most points over the span of six months. Join me on October 26 to drop off your Travel Bug for the race. And if you're in the mood for some great barbecue, then stay a little while and enjoy a plate full of your favorite animal! If barbecue isn't your thing, then stop by anyway to say hi and wish the other contestants good luck! I will also have a drawing for a door prize at the event for those who attend.

It's not an incredibly big restaurant - maximum capacity is 46 people - so this is a come and go as you please kind of event. I hope that three hours is long enough for everybody to drop off their bugs and sink your teeth into some delicious MEAT!.

At this event, there will be a table set up for us to drop off our Travel Bugs. I encourage you to take a Travel Bug (or more) with you when you leave so it can begin its journey. If there are any TB's left over at the end of the event, I will take the responsibility to hide them. Make sure you don't leave the event with your own Bug, though - that is a disqualification. I will also set up a Travel Bug Clinic to assist you with any last-minute repairs or reinforcements.

I've tried my best to outline everything below, but I'm sure there will be some questions or areas that may need clarification. If you were in the race last year, some of the rules have changed so please read the entire listing. Please feel free to voice your questions or concerns here and I will try to respond and answer your question.

The object of this race is for your Bug to accumulate as many points as possible in six months. The owners of the top 3 highest scoring bugs will be rewarded with a barely coveted prize. To enter the race, simply post here with a log or note of your intent. First 50 people who post will be entered in the race.

Now for the rules:
  • 1 Travel Bug to 1 geocaching account only.
  • Up to 50 Travel Bugs may enter - post a log on this page if you wish to enter.
  • I will be the judge. 100 points will be awarded to each TB owner that volunteers to help me referee (calculate points for up to 3 TB's to help me out and lighten the load, more on this below)
  • You do not need to be present for the event to enter a TB, but your TB must be present at the event. It must also be dropped off in the event's inventory. We will be using this event (at the restaurant) as the starting point. Contact me if you can't attend and want to mail in your entry.
  • Moving or posessing your own Travel Bug at any point during the race will disqualify it.
  • Good sportsmanship is essential - after all, this is just a game, please do not intentionally prevent another competitor's TB from participating (more on this below)
  • Travel Bug tag & hitchhiker(s) only - no geocoins or other trackables please (such as a car, other vehicle, trackable shirt, patch, your pet, your tattoo etc). If you have a question or are unsure, please feel free to contact me for an answer.
  • You may help another competitor's Travel Bug, but doing so may cause you to lose points (more on this below).
  • Negative points do not count. The lowest a score can go is zero.
  • If your TB goes missing, then it's gone and your final score will be calculated by what your TB accomplished before going missing. You may not release another TB, the copy tag or any other proxy in the place of your original TB.
  • When creating your TB's page, you must include a default photo of the Travel Bug. This picture is not eligible for points.
  • If you are entering the race, please post a link to your Travel Bug's page in a log on this page or add it to the inventory.
  • In the event of a tie, victory will go to the TB who has made the longest single jump during the race.
  • If you volunteer as a Referee please be able to post at least 1 points update to your assigned TB each month. At the end of the race, please post a total points tally. Serious volunteers only please.
  • I recommend adding this event cache to your Watchlist. This is where I will post updates and announcements about the race.

  • 35 points if the hitchhiker on your TB is too big to fit in a 30 calibur ammo can when you enter it in the race
  • 10% bonus to your final score if you state your "alliance" somewhere in your TB's description (South Jersey Geocaching, Central Jersey Geocaching or Northern New Jersey Cachers)

Losing points:
(applies only to contestants)
Players helping Travel Bugs belonging to other players is encouraged, but I am putting some penalties in place to encourage fair play. I want us to help each other, but I don't want us to hinder each other. You will lose points if you:
  • If you have another participant's Travel Bug in your inventory for more than two weeks, you lose half your total points at the end of the race.
  • If you post more than 5 actions for another participant's TB (Discover, Retrieve, Drop Off or Visit) you will lose 25 points for each log after the 5th log. "Write Note" does not count.
Disqualifications:
  • Moving your own bug will result in a disqualification.
  • If you leave the event with your own Travel Bug, it will be disqualified.
  • In an extreme and unforseen circumstance (at my discretion), if you are found to be engaged in conduct which is unsportsmanlike, dishonest or harmful to another participant's TB you may be disqualified. Alternatively, I may decide to issue a warning instead. I don't want to have to disqualify anybody. The truth is, it's just a silly game meant to bring fun, enjoyment and a tiny bit of healthy competition to us all. Let's not cheat or wreck anybody else's TB's. M'kay?
My suggestions:
  • Either myself or a volunteer referee will calculate and post your final score on your TB's page after the end of the race. Try and keep track of your points also, that way we can resolve any points disputes easily by comparing notes. I make mistakes sometimes, too.
  • You may want to read this thread on the Groundspeak forums - Snoogans' TB Longevity Clinic. It has many good ideas and suggestions to improve the longevity of your Travel Bug and it might give you an edge in the race.
  • It might be helpful to include some kind of laminated tag on your TB explaining that it is in a race and some ways to help it score points.
  • Be creative with your Bugs and your hides! There are many ways that you can strategize, and score some serious points. Take pictures and hide your friends' bugs creatively for some awesome combos.
  • Remember - when posting a photo of somebody's Travel Bug, please block out the TB's code. It's a secret!
GOOD LUCK!
