This cache is placed on the footpath between Maindencroft Lane and Brick Kiln Lane close to a pond which is full in winter, indeed sometimes overflows the path, but is often dry in summer. The pond is old but probably not natural as there is evidence that it had a sealed clay bottom. This area around Maidencroft Manor is quite boggy with a number of ponds and was originally grazing for cattle. You may encounter English Longhorn cattle (look terrifying but are actually quite docile) here at certain times of the year, and this would have been the type of cattle to be seen when Henry VIII visited the manor. Alternatively, you may see black sheep in the field especially around lambing time. The fields in the area are unimproved meadow (becoming increasingly rare) with a wide range of wildflowers and insects. Because of the nature of the ground, it can be quite wet at times, so cannot be considered to be all-weather for strollers, and suitable footwear in necessary. It is not necessary to cross the pond to access the cache. Parking is possible in Maidencroft Lane but please do not block gates as they are in regular use. Otherwise, it is necessary to park in Gosmore near the green and walk. Please ensure that it is in the hollow with rockoflage or stickoflage. Thanks.
