1885 - America's first commercially operated electric streetcar began operation in Baltimore.
- 1903Â -Â Charles Becker, master forger, referred to as âthe Dutchmanâ will be released from San Quentin prison. Becker was sentenced to seven years for counterfeiting $22,000. Apparently, he was a model prisoner who did artwork in prison. Becker is considered to be the most masterful criminal in forty years.
- 1948 - Candid Camera makes its television debut after being on radio for a year as Candid Microphone.

1990 - The Magellan space probe reaches Venus.

2008 - American swimmer Michael Phelps won the first of a record eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics by smashing his own world record in the 400-meter individual medley.
