Εδώ συναντήθηκαν για πρώτη φορά οι “Δάφνης και Χλόη”. Κατά τον Ηλία Βουτιερίδη που έκανε την πρώτη μετάφραση στην νεοελληνική γλώσσα: «το μυθιστόρημα είναι το καλλίτερο κι ομορφότερο από όσα εγράφηκαν πριν κ’ ύστερα απ’ αυτό και ότι φαίνεται σαν την πιο ευτυχισμένη εξακολούθηση της βουκολικής ποίησης - αν και σε πεζό λόγο - και σαν αληθινό γέννημα της μούσας του Θεόκριτου.
Όλοι οι κριτικοί της αρχαίας φιλολογίας παινεύουν την αφηγηματική χάρη, τη ζωηρότητα της περιγραφής, τις ζωντανές εικόνες των τόπων και των προσώπων, τη δροσιά και την απλότητα του ύφους, τη σύντομη φρασεολογία σαν το πιο όμορφο δείγμα εκείνου, που οι αρχαίοι το έλεγαν “αφελής λέξις” και που ταιριάζει τόσο στα τέτοιου είδους έργα.».
Το ποίημα μεταφράστηκε στην Ελλάδα σε χρονολογική σειρά από τους: Ηλία Βουτιερίδη, Γιώργο Ζευγώλη, Νίκο Σφυρόερα, Ρόδη Ρούφο, Φιλολογική Ομάδα Κάκτου, Πανταζή Κοντομίχη, Έφη Ταμπακάκη και Απόστολο Γονιδέλλη.
Οι μεταφράσεις του σε πολλές γλώσσες, με τις 500 και πλέον εκδόσεις, οι διασκευές, οι αποδόσεις σε πίνακες, γλυπτά, χορογραφία, σε μουσικές συνθέσεις, όπερα, θέατρο, κινηματογράφο (από τον Ορέστη Λάσκο με την ομώνυμη ταινία με σκηνές από τη Λέσβο το 1931), το τοποθετούν στα αριστουργήματα της ανθρώπινης καλλιτεχνικής δημιουργίας.
Αντιγράφοντας από το προοίμιο του ευαίσθητου ερωτικού ποιήματος του Λόγγου την πρώτη φράση:
«Εν Λέσβω θηρών εν άλσει Νυμφών θέαμα είδον, κάλλιστον ων είδον, εικόνα γραπτήν, ιστορίαν έρωτος»
αλλά και την μεγάλη αλήθεια στην τελευταία παράγραφο:
«ουδείς έρωτα έφυγεν ή φεύξεται, μέχρις αν κάλλος η και οφθαλμοί βλέπωσιν»,
... θα συστήναμε σε κάθε άνδρα και γυναίκα που επισκέπτεται την Λέσβο, νέο ή ηλικιωμένο, να βρεί το βιβλίο και να απολαύσει το κείμενο! Σίγουρα το ότι, θα έχετε ήδη επισκευθεί τον χώρο του "δράματος" θα σας βοηθήσει να το βιώσετε καλύτερα !

This is the place where « Daphnis and Chloe» first met. According to Helias Voutirides who first translated this novel from ancient Greek into modern Greek:" It is the best and most beautiful novel ever written and seems the happiest continuation of pastoral poetry - even in prose language - as a true offspring of Theocritus’ muse.
All ancient literature critics praise the narrative instance, the briskness of description, the vivid images of places and persons, the freshness and simplicity of style, the short phraseology as the most beautiful example of what, the ancients called "naive lexis (words) "and which fits such projects so well.
The poem was translated into modern Greek - in chronological orde by: Helias Voutiridis, George Zevgolis, Niko Sfyroeras, Rodi Rufus, Literary Group Cactus, Pantazis Kontomihis, Effie Tampakaki and Apostolos Gonidellis.
The poem has also been translated into other languages, and there are more than 500 versions. It has been depicted in paintings, sculptures, appeared in choreography for music, opera, theater, cinema (by Orestes Laskos, the movie of the same name with scenes from Lesvos in 1931). It ranks among the masterpieces of man’s artistic creativity.
Quoting the preamble of the sensitive erotic poem by Longus:
"In Lesbos, hunting in the forest of the Nymphs, I saw a spectacle, wondrous to see, an etched image, a love story."
and the great truth in the last paragraph:
«Nobody has avoided love, but neither has love avoided him, as long as there is beauty and our eyes will see»
... we would recommend to every man and woman visiting Lesvos, young or old, to get the book and enjoy the text! Even if you have already visited the site of "drama", it will help you experience it better!
