Many have asked me: Why the Man in the Maze?
The Man in the Maze image has a variety of meanings. One legend states that the man depicted in the image is the Native American god I’itoi, a mischievous character who lures humans to his labyrinth and promises a lifetime of searching for the exit if a gift is not brought to buy safe passage. Other tales told for centuries describe the Man in the Maze as a representation of the journey of life: a symbol of life, happiness, sadness, choices, and a final goal reached at the end of the journey at the time of death. Even more legends tell us that the image depicts the search for balance throughout life- mentally, physically, socially, spiritually.
Like many stories or songs, the words and the meaning are adaptable to fit many different situations and perspectives. My favorite representation of the Man in the Maze symbol is the picture it paints of a person’s journey through life. Each bend in the maze represents a different life choice the person makes, thus taking his or her life in a new direction. The choices that I have made in life, the bends in the path that I have taken, have led me to where I am today. The opportunity to come to San Angelo was not one that came easily, but it was one I sought after and was finally granted. It’s not truly the first choice, or bend in the road I’ve taken, but it is a significant turning point. My time here has given me the knowledge and training I need to start a new career- certainly a noteworthy bend in the road, and one I am grateful for. I look forward to where this new direction will take me and I can’t wait to see what happens next!
What choices have you made in life that brought you to where you are today?
