[ITA] Non molti sanno che la parola Ghetto ha origine veneziana: è infatti legata al luogo in cui gli ebrei veneziani furono costretti a risiedere nel '500, in precedenza occupato da una fonderia. La parola gèto, corrisponde infatti all'italiano getto, cioè gettata di metallo fuso; probabilmente gli ebrei di provenienza tedesca, pronunciando la parola con la -g- dura, diedero origine al vocabolo tuttora in uso.
Pur essendosi insediati nel Veneto a partire dal IV-V secolo, gli ebrei ingrandirono ed organizzarono la loro comunità veneziana soprattutto in seguito all'espulsione dalla Spagna, avvenuta nel 1492. Nel 1516 il Senato dispose che tutti gli ebrei dovessero obbligatoriamente risiedere nel Ghetto, le cui porte venivano chiuse durante la notte; non essendo consentita dalla legge la costruzione di nuovi edifici, l'unico modo per espandere quelli esistenti era di sopraelevarli, motivo per cui essi potevano raggiungere una notevole altezza, anche otto piani, caso unico in Venezia.
Nel corso del '500 vennero edificate varie sinagoghe, una per ogni gruppo di provenienza. Così sorsero la Schola Grande Tedesca, la Schola Canton (rito ashkenazita), la Schola Levantina, la Schola Spagnola e la Schola Italiana. Gli edifici costituiscono tuttora un complesso architettonico di grande interesse.
Con la caduta della Repubblica e l'avvento di Napoleone (1797), le discriminazioni nei confronti degli ebrei furono eliminate, così come le porte del ghetto e l'obbligo di residenza.
[ENG] Not many people know that the word Ghetto has a Venetian origin: it is the name of the place where Venetian Jews were forced to reside in the XIV century, a part of the city previously occupied by a foundry. The Venetian word Geto, corresponds in fact to Italian Getto, or metalcasting; probably Jews from Germany, pronouncing the word with a hard -g-, originated the word still in use.
Although settled in the Veneto region from the IV-V centuries, the Jews enlarged and organized their Venetian community especially after the expulsion from Spain in 1492. In 1516, the Venetian Senate ordered all Jews to live in the ghetto, whose doors were closed during the night; the law also forbid the construction of new buildings, so the only way to expand the existing ones was their superelevation up to a considerable height, even eight floors (this is the only case in entire Venice).
During the XIV century various synagogues were built, one for each group of origin: the Great German Schola, the Schola Canton (Ashkenazi rite), the Schola Levantine, the Schola Italian and Schola Spanish. The buildings are an architectural complex of great interest.
With the surrender of the Venetian Republic to Napoleon (1797), all discriminations against Jews were eliminated, as well as the ghetto gates removed and the residence requirement abolished.
