Geocache Description:

Geocaching has introduced us to all these little out of the way places and the history that lies there.  Even a very short way from here there is old Morehead City history.  Be respectful and don't do after dark.

As a kid, this area was always an interesting and unknown part of neighborhood life.  This cemetary dates back to the 1700's and while small was part of the chapel that belonged to Bell plantation.  Not much is known about this plantation or chapel, but the last names on the headstones are those of familar names in Morehead City.  The trees and the cemetary in general are in much, much better shape now than in my childhood.  One tree in particular had a large limb that crossed the lot and dangled low over the hedges.  This limb made it possible for us to climb the branch and scoot down the branch over the spooky and overgrown cemetary.  Our imagination would take over at this point and ghost stories were instantly created.  A quiet place, it is separate and apart from the residence nearby.  Check out the headstone with the epitaph "She made home happy" from the 1800's.  Property owner knows about this and has given permission, just please practice CITO.

The Biltmore Hotel is another story.  A grand hotel in its own right, it boasted a grand history until the late 50's.  It burned to the ground one night in a dramatic fire, on the sight where the condominiums are today.  They had a large swimming pool and I know people who took swimming lessons there in the summer.  There was a golf course too and most of the homes in Mansfield Park are built on top of it.  While not online, you can see pictures of the grand hotel in the History of Morehead City book that you can find all over town.

Cache is a match stick container with log only.  Cache is NOT near any graves so there is no need to search there.  Again, please be respectful. Please park on Atlantic street, there is an easy path through the hedge there.

Please close container tightly and place back as found.

Congratulations to Nat Sherman for FTF.
