Geocache Description:

Another great cache along the Crown Zellerbach Trail.

The cache is not at the posted coordinates. Here are the clues to find the cache:

  1. The box is hidden approximately 120 paces west of Mile Post 12.
  2. You will know you have arrived in the general area when you arrive at a spot where the canopy on the right (north) is high and dominated by deciduous trees and the left (south) side of the trail is dominated by evergreens, tall but not giant. Climb the slope on the right (north) side of the trail, not far.
  3. The box is hidden under a pile of short logs at the base of a tree. My eight-year-old son picked out this hiding place and the camouflage.

The name of this cache, kalis, is the Chinook word for raccoon. Since I live in Scappoose (the Chinook word for gravelly plain), I thought it would be fun to name my caches in Chinook. This is my 26th hide, celebrating my 260th find. The cache is hidden about 1.8 miles from the parking coordinates.

The Crown Zellerbach trail was once a logging road and before that, a logging railroad. Today it is a linear county park. It is a rails-to-trails project that is progressing as funding permits. Mile posts have recently appeared!

This is my 16th letterbox cache, but only my 2nd hand-carved stamp. I only became interested in letter boxing just last year (2012), and there are so few in this area that I decided right away that I wanted to start hiding some. Remember: letterboxes include stamps, which are not trade items. I placed the stamp in a labeled bag. I placed the trade items in another labeled bag, so you shouldn't get them mixed up.
