Geocache Description:

Eastern Cemetery Corporation opened the first crematorium in the City of Louisville and possibly the State of Kentucky in the early 1930's. The crematorium was in the building facing Baxter Avenue at the front gate. That building served as the offices, chapel and crematory until 1957. In 1957, the present offices, chapel, crematory and columbarium were completed.
In its heyday this facility provided cremation services to most of the funeral directors in the Louisville area. Additionally, they were contracted with numerous area hospitals for the disposition of organic medical waste (body parts removed during surgery). But as with Eastern Cemetery it fell in to disuse in the late 1980's and was closed in 1989 amid allegations improprieties in the cremations and burials conducted here.
All remains were removed from the columbarium by court order in 2003. In 2005, a walk in crypt in the cemetery was found unlocked and contained boxes of cremated human remains. Some of the boxes contained multiple names and still others were just labeled as unknown. The offices, crematory and columbarium exits have since been permanently bricked up to prevent trespassing and further vandalism.
The building now sports a fresh coat of paint to cover the years of graffiti and a mural of an angel holding a dove with an American flag in the background. This mural was designed and painted by a group of three local artists. Reportedly this mural was a wish for everlasting peace and as a tribute to the contributions of African-American veterans (many of who are buried in Eastern Cemetery) to the nation.
You are looking for a green RX bottle hidden in a location with a good view of the crematory. It contains only a log - so bring your own pen. Please use a little of the natural cover to hide this from the casual observer. Coordinates have been averaged 100 time to within 10', but your results may vary so a generous hint is being provided. You can stop within a couple feet of the cache or pull off the road to park within 50'. You will not need to cross any graves to retrieve this cache. This area seems to be big with dog walkers - have seen several and not a plastic bag between them. If you decide to go explore the cemetery be careful where you step. As with all cemetery caches - no night caching. Be aware and respectful of those visiting the deceased (their business there is certainly more important than yours).
2/1/16 - Cache is now a hanging cammo'ed pill fob containing only a vinyl log. A permanent marker works best here. Pens will leave dents - dents are acceptable - not making your mark is not.
