Geocache Description:

Cache container is next to trail in a rock cave. Nice hike to location crossing some scree and a river. River crossing might be difficult after heavy rains. More caches to visit in the area.

The cache is on the Du Toitskloof pass.

It is told that in the 1970’s early 80’s it was a challenge to travel from Rawsonville to Paarl over the Du Toitskloof pass.  This was before the tunnel and new N1 highway was build.  Many stories were told about people racing the distance in incredible times.  Vehicles such as the Ford Capri’s (V8), Renault Gordini’s, Ford Angela’s (customized) and the well-known Ford Mustang (also V8) was favorite.  Whether these stories are true or not or just to impress the friends and gender sex we will not know.  In those years “drifting” was not known.  One raced hard to the corner, slammed on brakes and then pedal to the metal for the straight.

One story that is true was about a 35 ton lorry coming down the pass toward Paarl.  There were two laborers on the back of the truck and the driver in front.  On the down run the brakes of the lorry failed at some point causing it to gather speed.  The one laborer jumped ship (rather lorry) when he realized what is happening.  The other one tightened his grip on the railings, dug in his teeth and clung for dear life as the lorry picked up speed.

The driver managed to turn every corner on the way down.  Eventually the lorry stopped 3 km from the Paarl.  The amazing thing is that he did not lose his frightened passenger or hit anything on the road.  Minor damage to the vehicle was all that he suffered, and some grey hair.  After the ordeal he said that he was very thankful there were no vehicles in front of him or any approaching him.  This allowed that he could litterly cut corners and managed to keep the lorry in the road.

After a few months he was awarded with a certificate form the then minister of transport for safe driving and road safety.

The cache is placed at a corner on the trial in Miaspoort going to the Italian Cross.  Be careful as you might walk into the cache at the turn.  A permit is required for the hike in the Poort from Cape Nature.   Wild card holders also need a permit but no fee is payable.  At the time of this listing the cost was R 45 per person.  Park at the indicated co-ordinates and walk the short distance to the trailhead.  Past the scree turn left towards the cache.

Crossing the river after heavy rains might be challenging.  In any event be careful when doing so.  Please replace container as found.
