Nietypowy wygląd Biblioteki Elbląskiej wiążę się z przeszłością obiektu, w którym mieści się ta instytucja. W dniu 15 marca 1242 roku rada miejska Elbląga i mistrz krajowy wystawili akt fundacyjny dla budynku. Pierwotnie służył on jako przytułek dla starców i chorych a następnie - jako szpital. Dawny zespół poszpitalny spłonął podczas działań wojennych w 1945 roku. W odbudowanym w latach 70. obiekcie mieści się Biblioteka Elbląska.
Biblioteka posiada jeden z bardziej cennych zbiorów starodruków. Po wojnie zostały one przewiezione do Torunia, gdzie stały się częścią zbiorów biblioteki uniwersyteckiej. W ostatnich latach cenne zbiory, stanowiące fragment dawnej Biblioteki Elbląskiej powróciły na swoje miejsce. Warto odwiedzić bibliotekę w Elblągu, by zapoznać się z ciekawymi zbiorami zgromadzonymi w Pracowni Regionalnej. Unusual appearance of Elbląg Library brings with past of the facility where the institution is located. On 15 March 1242 years, the city council set the foundation for the building act. Originally it served as a shelter for the elderly and the sick and then - as a hospital. Former post hospital complex burned down during the war in 1945. Buildings were rebuilt in the 70s and in this place an Elblag’s Library started to work.
The library has one of the most valuable collections of old books. After the war they moved to Toruń, where he became a part of the library of the university. In recent years, valuable collections, which are part of the former Library of Elblag returned to his seat. It is worth to visit the library in Elblag, to learn about the interesting collections stored in the Regional Workshop.
