Geocache Description:

Welcome to Targu Mures - Santana

[en]Targu Mures, named before Mures-Osorhei, Osorheiu, Targul Muresului is the residence and the biggest city of Mures County, situated in the center of the historic Transylvania, on both sides of the superior course of Mures river. Placed in the north-center Romania, the city has as geographical bountries the Mures river and Cornesti hill. Targu Mures is bordering with Sangeorgiu de Mures, Cristesti, Livezeni, Santana de Mures, Sancraiu de Mures and Bardesti.

Between the touristic objectives of the city we can list the city Center, with the central square, named Roses Square, where many edifices built in baroque, neoclassic and secessionist styles can be admired, such as Saint John the Baptist Church, Franciscan Tower, Culture Palace or the old City Hall, which creates an image of the dualistic period.
The walls of the medieval citadel are the living proof of the prolongued city history, a real politic and economic power in the Transylvania Principality.

[ro]Targu Mures, mai demult Mures-Osorhei, Osorheiu, Targul Muresului este resedinta si cel mai mare municipiu al judetului Mures, situat in centrul Transilvaniei istorice, pe ambele maluri ale cursului superior al raului Mureș. Situat in zona central-nordică a Romaniei, orasul are ca delimitare geografica raul Mures si dealul Cornesti. Targu Mures se invecineaza cu comunele Sangeorgiu de Mures, Cristesti, Livezeni, Santana de Mures, Sancraiu de Mures si Bardesti.

Dintre obiectivele turistice ale orasului amintim Centrul, cu piata centrala, numita Piata Trandafirilor, unde se afla nenumarate cladiri construite in stil baroc, neoclasicist si secesionist, cum ar fi Biserica Sfantul Ioan Botezatorul, Turnul franciscanilor, Palatul Culturii sau fosta primarie, care creeaza o atmosfera tipic perioadei dualiste.
Zidurile cetatii medievale sunt dovada istoriei indelungate a orasului care a avut o putere politico-economica importanta in Principatul Transilvaniei.
