Der St. Peter-Hügel in Altenburg war bereits in der Urgeschichte als natürlich geschützter Siedlungsplatz genutzt worden. Im 5./6. Jahrhundert nach Christus wurde am höchsten Punkt des Hügels eine dreischiffige Basilika errichtet. Der Legende nach soll die Kirche auf den um 400 gestorbenen Bischof Vigilius von Trient zurückgehen. Mit der Schließung der Kirche 1782 begann der Verfall, bis sie nach Grabungsarbeiten im Jahr 1996 und Sanierungsmaßnahmen im Jahr 2000 neu geweiht wurde.
Die St. Peters Ruine ist auch die letzte Station des Friedensweges, der Kaltern und Altenburg gemütlich verbindet. Eine Einkehrmöglichkeit bietet der Altenburgerhof P2.
Wanderung 1 (ca. 1 Stunde)
Vom Parkplatz P1 Müllereck aus führt der Weg hinab durch den Wald in die rauschende Rastenbachklamm, über Brücken, Treppen und Felsen dem Bach entlang bis zum kühlenden Wasserfall W1. Von dort geht es ein Stück zurück und dann hinauf zum St. Peters Hügel auf ca. 570 Meter Höhe, vorbei an Knappenlöchern, den Zeugen alten Bergbaus.
Wanderung 2 (30 Minuten):
Von der Parkmöglichkeit P2 oder P3 führt ein kürzerer Weg zur Aussichtsplattform A1 hinter der St. Vigil-Kirche von Altenburg. Von dort genießt man einen atemberaubenden Blick auf den Kalterer See und Umgebung. In ca. 15 Minuten erreicht man von hier aus die St. Peters-Ruine. Die Schlucht dazwischen wird über eine Hängebrücke überquert.

La collina San Pietro era stata abitata fin dalla preistoria, in quanto luogo di insediamento protetto naturalmente. Nel V/VI secolo d. C. venne edificata sulla sua cima una basilica a tre navate. Secondo la leggenda, la chiesa è in qualche modo collegata alla figura di Vigilio, vescovo di Trento, morto intorno all’anno 400 d. C. Con la chiusura della chiesa nell’anno 1782 cominciò il suo degrado, fino a che nel 1996 non vennero condotti lavori di scavo e nell’anno 2000, dopo alcuni lavori di restauro, la chiesa venne nuovamente consacrata.
La rovina di San Pietro è anche l’ultima stazione del “Sentiero della Pace”, che collega Caldaro a Castelvecchio.
Il caratteristico locale Altenburgerhof P2 offre una piacevole possibilità di sosta rinfrescante dopo la camminata.
Escursione 1 (1 ora):
Dal parcheggio P1 „Müllereck“ inizia il sentiero che, attraverso il bosco, conduce fino alla scrosciante gola del rio “Rasten”. Attraverso ponti, rocce e scale si segue il torrente fino alla fresca cascata W1. Da qui si torna in dietro per un po’ e si sale fino al colle di San Pietro (ca. 570 metri di altitudine), passando vicino a diversi buchi scavati nella roccia dai minatori in tempi passati, testimoni di antiche miniere.
Escursione 2 (30 minuti):
Dal parcheggio P2 o P3 una scorciatoia conduce a una piattaforma panoramica A1 dietro la chiesa di San Vigilio di Castelvecchio. Da qui si può ammirare un panorama mozzafiato verso il Lago di Caldaro e dintorni. In ca. 15 minuti si può raggiungere la rovina di San Pietro. La gola che si trova lungo la strada può essere superata tramite un ponte tibetano.

The St. Peter-Hill in Altenburg was an old prehistoric settlement site. In the 5th/6th century there was built a basilica with three naves. In the year 2000 this old basilica was renovated and devoted again. The St. Peters ruin is also the last station of the „Way of peace“, which connects Kaltern and Altenburg.
Walking-tour 1 (ca. 1 hour)
From Müllereck P1 the way leads down to the canyon of “Rastenbach” and over bridges, stairs and rocks to the cascade W1. From there the way leads up to the St. Peters Hill on 570 meter a.s.l.
Walking-tour 2 (30 minutes):
From P2 or P3 a short way leads to the viewing platform A1 behind the St. Vigil church of Altenburg. From there you have a beautiful view down to the sea of Kaltern and the surroundings. In 15 minutes you reach the St. Peters ruine. The canyon between is crossed by a rope bridge.
