Geocache Description:

Church Micro 4064 - Moorhouse Chantry Chapel, Nottinghamshire

The present Chantry Chapel at Moorhouse, also known as St. Nicholas' Church was built in 1860-61 by Henry Clutton for J E Denison of Ossington Hall (who was Speaker of the House of Commons and later became Viscount Ossington) for a cost of around £1000.

The style of the building is French Gothic. The building comprises nave with south porch, chancel with north vestry, and bell turret above the nave/chancel junction. The construction is of local, Laxton field stone with Ancaster stone dressings and a brick interior. There was formerly a boiler-house on the north side of the nave, now demolished; the footings of the north nave wall behind this former structure appear to indicate earlier, probably medieval, foundations. The roof of the chancel is formed-up as a quadripartite stone vault.

There is some green interior painted decoration. The single bell is early medieval and the oldest church bell in the Diocese of Southwell, being cast in Nottingham circa 1160 and is possibly the oldest in the county (Littleborough church also has a bell cast circa 1160).

From the location of the cache you will see the Public Footpath which leads to the church. This passes through a field in which cows graze freely (can you see the one in the photograph of the church above?), so please keep dogs under firm control.
