Geocache Description:

An easy park and grab near the high point of Carpenterville Road. It's also one of the longest straightaways on this road between Pistol River and Brookings. Log only, bring something to write with.

Ever look at an Oregon road map and see a town called Carpenterville? This is, I mean WAS it. The place has been gone for decades, but it still shows up on AAA maps and in-car navigation systems. I'm told there used to be a gas station and post office in this very spot. As you can see, there are no services whatsoever today. The end came when the Thomas Creek bridge allowed the coast highway to cross a deep canyon it had previously bypassed in a wide arc that wound its way up into the mountains. The old road now goes by the name Carpenterville Road, now a scenic alternative that runs from the South Coast Lumber mill in Brookings to Pistol River Road.
