This WAR BUNKER located in Coal Harbour, off tip of Northern Vancouver Island, played a vital role in our Canadian coastal defense during WWII. The Royal Canadian Air Force began work on a seaplane base and reconnaissance station in 1940 and by 1941 over 250 personnel were stationed in this tiny Coal Harbour community. The base crews provided off-shore surveillance, using long-range flying boats to patrol up and down the coast. When the war ended the base closed leaving many of the original base buildings converted for local uses, and this geocaching site that took a bit to finally locate! Glad i persisted, you will be too! Also associated with TB "support our troops" in this same general tri-port area area is a fully intack airplane crash site. GCJ97A Dakota 576 Aircraft left Victoria BC on a navigational exercise, over shot the PortHardy runway, ran out of fuel so it had no forward thrust and virtually laid down in forest. Our Royal Canadian Air Force, erected a beautiful monument on behalf of the two men killed on duty!
