Geocache Description:

Bucholly is one of the less well known castles in Caithness. It's in a beautiful, secluded spot. Seldom visited and off the beaten track.

The castle is a ruin but enough remains to get a feel for the place. The entrance gate is largely intact. Beware! Access is across a narrow neck of land with sheer cliffs on either side. The setting takes some beating. It's very much in the "Let's Build It on the Edge of a Cliff" school of fortress construction common in our county.

About 2km south of Frewick, there's an abandoned croft by the side of the A99, marked as Smithy House on Ordnance Survey maps. A short walk further south, there's a farm track on the opposite (seaward) side of the road. Follow this track, it takes you past a ruined farm. Eventually the track ends and from here on its over rough pasture with sheep trails to follow and a ditch to cross.

The cache is some distance away from Bucholly castle.

Beware of unfenced cliffs. This cache is not recommended for children.

The castle dates from around the 1400s and is built on the site of an even earlier fortress called Lambaborg that dates back to the 1100s. Bucholly fell into disuse around 1660.
