The Taneatua Branch railway line passes through Awakeri and northwards.
This railway branch line is now disused. Passenger services through Awakeri were provided by the Tanneatua Express Train from 1928 until 7 February 1959, when the steam-hauled carriage train was replaced by an 88-seater railcar service that terminated in Te Puke. A private railway operated by the CHH Whakatane Mill also used to run from Awakeri station to the mill at Whakatane. The line is now closed and lifted but used to run alongside State Highway 30; most of the rest of the disused line still continues alongside parts of State Highway 2 towards Matata. Along the way are all sorts of little bridges in various stages of disrepair.
