Geocache Description:

Sidetracked Upton

Upton railway station lies on the Bidston to Wrexham line and serves both Upton and Noctorum. It was opened in 1896 and used to have a booking office on the road bridge and a waiting room on each platform. There are proposals to electrify the line, which would enable it to join the Merseyrail network and have direct trains to Liverpool city centre.

At peak times there are hourly services between Biston and Wrexham. This drops to every two hours in the evenings and less frequently at weekends. The numbers of users of the station has steadily increased over the last decade. From 2004-8 it was 13-15,000 a year, and since 2008 it has increased each year from, 21,000 to over 24,000.

This cache in not on the station itself, but a quiet footpath that leads down between the railway line and the M53 motorway. It is a micro and only contains a logbook, so please remember your own pen. It’s not possible to see Upton station from the cache location, but if you want to see it, just make your way through the bushes and shrubs and it soon becomes visible. After finding this cache, rather than simply heading back up the path, you can continue further along the path and find another cache – “Bridge Over The River Fender” – GC46F3X.
