This cache is located where a new sculpture was recently erected in a corner of Gibson Park. This piece was created by a local artist who also has other installations around town.
(From KRTV.com) Artist Mike Hollern designed the piece; he noted, "I do things that are associated with the landscape work that I do. I try and incorporate some sculpture work into every landscape project that I do." In each of his sculptures, Hollern says he brings onlookers a bit of Montana history, such as old farm machinery, logging chains, and stones. Hollern said, "When you work with objects like that they kind of define for you what the sculpture's going to be. You're not really creating, but you're kind of discovering what's there and putting it into the place you'd like it to be." Hollern explained that farming equipment is holding the piece together, just like it does for the community. The lion's head atop the sculpture is from the First National Bank building from 1913. The large stones and other parts came from places such as the Civic Center, police station, 9th Street Bridge, and the Weissman Bridge. The sculpture is the beginning of a large archway that is planned at that location. Doug Wicks, president of Recreation Trails Inc., noted that Hollern has created more outdoor public art in Great Falls than any other artist."
Enjoy this piece and take a stroll around Gibson Part to enjoy the other features the park has to offer!
