Geocache Description:

Placed in remembrance of the 4 day Fjörður walk that was made as part of the IIGE event series.

See more here : Event at Látur (GC47ETX)

To reach this area you will have to start from Grenivík or even taking you closer, from the old abandoned farm Svinárnes (you can park your 4x4 here if you do not mind horses taking a chew on it or rubbing themselves against it). There is a partly bad and rugged track taking you somewhat longer north if you have the driving ability and a good 4x4. You will have to walk to Látur and cross the mountains at the ridge Uxaskarð. There are no marked walking pathes except partly over Uxaskarð itself.

Calculate with one overnight stay in the hut at Látur or in your tent.

Be prepared for heavy fog rolling in from the sea since visibility can get down to zero and you should have a correct tracklog in your GPS to walk safe. !

There have been many farms, and ruins still persist, along the coastline but all were abandoned at latest during the 1940th. This area is ideal for some longer walks and popularity for this has increased over the years. You can actually walk all the way to Naustavík in Skjálfandi on a demanding trip along the sea and over the mountains. Best time of the year is normally mid July to mid August.

There is a big new hut in Látur close to the sea which needs to be prebooked for an overnight stay. It comes with a very high standard including heating up possibilities. Views are gorgeous on a bright day.

There are pathes you can follow but they are easy to loose when walking in fog due to lack of markings. The track to Uxaskarð is a true experience regardless if coming from Keflavik or from Grenivik. You might be able to slide down large snow fields on plastic bags if coming from north !!

Take care while walking since you will be left much on your own here !

The cache is a short PET tube holding only a log strip and a drying agent bag. There is no pen in the cache so BRING YOUR OWN PEN ! PLEASE REHIDE WELL PROTECTED AFTER YOUR VISIT !!

Views are breath taking when a clear sky, especially if you take the stroll up Gjögur where you will overview the full Eyjafjörður area.

You will be rewarded with a terrific view over the sea and over the valleys !

Good luck and enjoy the scenery !

Ingabo
