The temps dropped and the weather looked wonderful, so decided to take a day off from my school work and head out for a long overdue stroll at Coe.

Route:
Hunting Hollow > Middle Steer > Bowl Trail > Wilson Camp > Steer Ridge Rd > Serpentine > Grizzly Gulch > Wagon Road > Phegley Ridge > Hunting Hollow.

Ended up doing 16.1 miles, 4190' of ascent. Classic Coe! :) Felt good in the home stretch down Hunting Hollow, much better than I expected after this many miles.

Part of the mission for the day was pulling caches. Archiving everything in my inventory as time allows. Too many hassles and too much whining from cachers. Verbal abuse in email and logs. Finds logged when they did not visit and sign. People celebrating the king of fake logs with events! And GS not providing any support when the CO tries to enforce the quality of his caches. Done.

My suggestions for anyone that has concerns with this approach:
* Help clean up the game by raising your concerns with Groundspeak. Let them know that bad behavior by players, cheating, allowing false finds, and such has degraded the game.
* Do the same with the cachers involved. Politely hold them accountable. Publicly, in some cases, if need be.

The cache is NOT at the posted coordinates.

It is within two miles of the posted coordinates. But these are Coe miles, so travelers beware!  There might just be a little bit of up and down involved.  (Hee, hee, hee.)  Answer the questions below to calculate the final location.

Yeah! It is Geocaching.com’s “31 Days Of Geocaching” celebration!  They are encouraging us to get out and cache, enjoy the outdoors.  I was targeting some other activities the day this cache was setup, but had a last minute change of plans.  What better way for me to celebrate AND to blow away a gray mood than a walkabout in one of my favorite parks?!  A rare cool August day at Coe.  A long summer day allowing hours of caching time.  Miles of paths to follow. A backpack full of containers. Time to hit the trail!  Time to visit new places. Time to visit some I have been to before.  Let’s see, what would be an appropriate number of new caches to drop on such a day?  Let’s start with this one puzzle/mystery cache and see where we go from there, shall we?

Here are the questions. Answer these and find the final treasure.  Searches of the Geocaching.com and the Coe SP related websites will yield you the answers.  Google search and Wikipedia will likely be needed too.

  1. When was the first GPS satellite (Navstar 1) launched? (Hint: "great blue switch") Add the digits of the year (Y+Y+Y+Y) to get a two digit number. Add those two digits together.  This is A

  2. On what date (MMDDYYY) was selective availability turned off, immediately improving civilian GPS accuracy and setting the stage for the game of geocaching?  Add the digits of the day to get B.

  3. When was the first geocache placed (MMDDYYYY)?  Day = C

  4. When the term “geocaching” was first coined on the forums?  Add the digits of the day to get D.

  5. On what date was the Geocaching.com site launched?  Month = E

  6. What was the date of the first recorded instance of a geocaching get-together (now known as an Event Cache)?  Add the digits of the year to get F.

  7. When was the first International Geocaching Day?  Add the digits of the year to get G.

  8. As of December, 2012, how many total satellites are in the GPS constellation?  Count = HJ

  9. On what date did Geocaching hit 2 million geocaches?  K = M+M+D+D+Y+Y+Y+Y

  10. According to Wikipedia, Henry Coe State Park has over ?9,000 acres of open spaces.  L = ?

  11. According to the Pine Ridge Association, what year did Juan Bautista de Anza pass through what is now the Dowdy entrance of Coe State Park? Year = 17MN

  12. On what date did Sada Robinson gift deed Pine Ridge Ranch to the county of Santa Clara, laying the foundation for the present Coe State Park?  Add the digits of the year to get a two digit number. Add those two digits together.  This is P.

  13. How much did the state of California pay the county of Santa Clara for Coe Park?  Add the digits to get Q.

  14. The largest lake in the park, Mississippi Lake, is how many acres?  Add the digits to get R.

    According to the USGS topo maps, what is the elevation in feet for each of the following spots?  Use the last digit of the elevation as indicated.
  15. S = Mount Sizer
  16. T = Bills Hill
  17. U = Burra Burra Peak
  18. V = Vasquez Peak
  19. W = Willson Peak
  20. X = Mustang Peak
  21. Y = Gulnac Pk
  22. Z = Hunting Hollow entrance

Final coordinates:

North:  [L-N]M   V[F+E-P].[S+C-X]A[G-B]
Checksum = 28

West: Q[U+W][P-T]   [K+Z].[H+J][D+E-Y][R-X]
Checksum = 23
