The song is of unknown origin and it dates back to at least the World War I during which it was sung by both the American and British soldiers. Alfred Hitchcock used a variation of the melody as the theme his Alfred Hitchcock Present, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. 

The day that this cache was submitted is the anniversary of when he was born. Born: Alfred Joseph Hitchcock August 13, 1899 in Leytonstone, London, England, UK. Died: April 29, 1980 (age 80) in Bel Air, Los Angeles, California, USA
