Geocache Description:

This cache is placed in a popular fishing spot. However, this was not always a fishing spot. In fact, this use to be along a road that led to a town. A forgotten piece of history. Near GZ, when the water level is low, you can still find the road that leads to this town. If you are careful, you can walk out on the road a ways. I personally have walked out it about 500 feet before I became nervous and turned back. Stepping off the road is a drop off. I highly recommend not doing that unless you are a strong swimmer and with a group.

This location is said to be where the old road went into Newville. Newville was founded by John Frederick Herring around 1820. Early settlers to Newville used the Old Wyandot trail while the later settlers would use the Portage road. The Portage road was built by General Harrison's Army during the war of 1812. Whether this road is the old Wyandot trail or Portage road, I do not know. If I had to guess, I would guess it was the Portage road or maybe even a different road all together. I've always heard this road refered to as the old Newville road. Newville was thought to be a very successful town due to all of the available water around this area. However, when the railroads were built in both Perrysville and Butler, but not in Newville, this thought seemed to change due to the fact that most non-railroad towns didn't seem to be as successful. Pleasant hill dam was completed in 1936. I found somewhere that said the town was evacuated in the 1940's. However, based on my own assumptions, I would assume Newville was evacuated sometime around 1935-1937.

Rumor has it that underneath all of the water in the lake, parts of the town still exist today. Please feel free to share anything you may know about the history of Newville or of this area. Share your local history knowledge so that it is not forgotten!!!
