You seek a handicap accessible micro cache. (good cacher's always bring their own pen) You will find it somewhere across the street from the two story stone and brick house at 503 West Elk Street in Siler city. It was at this house that the actress Frances Bavier, who played Aunt Bea in the iconic TV series, "The Andy Griffith Show", lived out the last years of her life.
The following is from the book, "Carlina Curiosities" by Jerry Bledsoe (1984 Ed., East Woods Press)
"France's Bavier, a New York actress, appeared in movies and plays for 22 years without achieving great fame until 1960' when she landed a role as Aunt Bea on "The Andy Griffith Show" on national television.
The show became number one in the ratings and won Frances Bavier an Emmy before it ended in 1970. It remains a top-rated rerun show.
In 1963, Frances Bavier came to North Carolina to undergo the famous rice diet at Duke University. While there, she became friends with a Siler City woman who invited her to her home and took her on a tour around the state. It was Miss Bavier who urged the writers of "The Andy Griffith Show" to work Siler City into the story line of the show, which was set in North Carolina.
After her retirement from show business in 1972, she bought a house in Siler City and settled there. In her early years in the town, she made frequent public appearances in the area, but after her health began to fail, she went into seclusion."
On December 6, 1989, died at her home of a heart attack.
Bavier is interred at Oakwood Cemetery in Siler City. Her headstone includes the name of her most famous role, "Aunt Bea"
