Demir Hisar (which means "Iron fortress" in Turkish) is a municipality in southwestern part of Republic of Macedonia. Demir Hisar is situated along the main road between Bitola and Kicevo. Yet, this region is relatively less visited than the others, but ones you discover its preserved secrets and beauties, you will never forget it…

The Demir Hisar municipality is a hilly and mountainous area located in the southwestern part of Macedonia, around the upper basin of the Crna Reka (Black River). The area of the municipality spreads between the mountains of Bushava on east, Bigla, Plakenska and Ilinska on the south-west and Drevenik on south-east. The seat of the Demir Hisar municipality is Demir Hisar city.

The village Zhurche

Through this area flows Crna Reka (Black River), the largest and longest (207 km) right tributary of Vardar River. It emerges near the village Zheleznec and flows into Vardar next to the archeological site Stobi (near Negotino city).

It is known that the monastery church is raised in 1121 year and completely painted in 1622. By its’ architectural form the monastery church is among the rare ones in Macedonia and the Balkan.

The Monastery

Recently the monk life was renewed in this monastery and a small sisterhood community lives here. The church and the monastery are closed, however the sisters will gladly open the church for you and hold a lecture about it. Just ring the bell on the gate. The entrance is free of charge, but you can leave a small donation (or buy a souvenir).

Pay attention on the frescos, they are very rear! One of the most interesting is a fresco of a tho-headed Byzantium eagle, painted on the right side inside the church by the window.

The sisters were a little bit suspicious about geocaching, so rather do not mention it .

How to get there: From the main road (Kichevo-Bitola) turn toward Krushevo city (R1). From here, after some 3.7 km (R2) turn right toward the Zhurche village. Drive through the village and continue on narrow asphalt road about 2.75 km to the cache. From here it takes 250 meters to the Monastery.
