Sammen med de fossile beina til ulike dinoraurarter fant man ofte avrundede klumper som heller ikke hørte naturlig hjemme i sandsteinen. Etterhvert ble det klart at dette var de fossile rester av tykktarmsinnholdet til dyret. Ved å analysere disse kan man forske på hva som var dyrenes diett. Koprolittene er selvsagt gjennomfossilisert, men man kan hente ut knokler og andre kjente strukturer som overlever en tur gjennom mage/tarmkanal.

Heaped together with the fossilized remains of the ancient dinosaurs strange round lumps of rock was found (Coprolites). It was discovered that this actually was the remains of the content in the intestines of the animal. By analyzing this a lot can be determined about the food they ate.
