I Magnus Erikssons landslag från 1300-talet föreskrevs, att varje gård skulle hålla vargnät, varggård och varggrop. Denna skyldighet upphörde först år 1864, varefter också fångst i grop förbjöds.
En fångstgrop avsedd för varg ligger uppe på höjden.
Ofta grävde man flera gropar på rad. Ibland klädde man väggarna med trä eller sten. Mitt i gropen placerade man en hög påle med slaktavfall högst upp och så högt att då vargen kom var köttstycket högre upp än kanten på gropen. Eftersom den var täckt av ett tunt grenverk och vargen tittade uppåt mot köttet klev den ut över gropen, föll ner och var fast.
A pitfall intended for wolf is on the hill. Such pits with variants are known from the 1600s and was used until the 1800s. Often you dug several pits in a row. In the middle of the pit there was a high pole with slaughterhouse waist at the top and so high up that when the wolf came, the meat was well above the edge of the pit. Since the pit was covered by thin branches and the wolf looked up towards the meat it walked towards the pole, fell down and was hooked.
