Geocache Description:

A short uphill walk on grassy track with out standing views near GZ.  *****Absolutely No dogs please.****

Many thanks to the Mugdock Mudpies for the route, and to Mugdock Estates for permission to place. Please note if the driveway gate is closed then please open it carefully and close it behind you.

For those of you that completed my original Missing Tower cache over the years I hang my head in shame as I had the tower location in the wrong place, my childhood memory got it wrong. I discovered quite by accident today that the tower if fact still exists allbeit at a very reduced height of about two metres. Rather than change the coords I have created a new cache and archived the old one.

Please follow the instructions for access, start and park at the South Lodge car park which is at the hairpin bend above the reservoirs. Walk a few paces up the driveway at the end of the lane and turn right just before the yellow sign which says "tower wood only". Continue uphill till you come to a wall, the tower is now actually to the left but please cross the low wall and take a few steps forward to capture the fantastic views then come back over the wall before proceeding to the tower.

This was a fairly ornate stone tower, roughly 25 feet high it had a huge central spiral staircase inside leading to the top, curiously the internal spiral staircase had a large gap of about eighteen inches between the outer edge of the steps and the inside of the tower outer wall, I remember it well, no other floors within, originally thought to have been a folly (locally known as Smith's Folly) built for Craigend Estate, it later became a watchtower for the reservoir during the war years. It was demolished due to becoming unstable in the late 70s or early 80s and sadly only about a two metre high section remains, clearly octagonal  in shape. The dismantled stone from the tower sits in a large overgrown pile some fifty feet North of the tower, wouldn't it be great to see it restored! It is still shown on the latest OS map.

If anyone has any photos or memories of the tower please message me, as a child I had many a happy day in the late sixties perched on top of the tower.
