Geocache Description:

Original Sedgwick County Poor Farm

The original poor farm was built in approximately 1916 and sat at this site on 160 acres.  The poor farm building, according to the plat maps, sat at approximately the location of the Thunderbird Bowling Alley.

The 160 acres consisted of 40 acres of corn, 12 acres of oats, 20 acres of alfalfa and two orchards of peach, plum, cherry, apricot and apple trees.  They also had 6 horses, 24 pigs and 12 milk cows.

The county poor farm moved to the former Wichita Sanitarium building on West Douglas in 1930 and was on 35 acres.

Good luck and enjoy all your caching journeys!!
