In Greek mythology, satyrs are are deities of the woods and mountains. They are depicted as being half human, half goat; they have a male head and torso, but goat tail, legs and horns. Satyrs are the companions of Dionysus, god of wine, and spent their time drinking wine and dancing. The chief satyr was Silenus.
Over time, the depiction of satyrs in Greek art changed from elderly and unattractive to youthful and attractive, in much the same way as nymphs were portrayed as young and beautiful.
The female counterpart of a satyr is a nymph.
