Moses Hole is a circular lagoon paradise surrounded by mangroves. You will need to kayak or canoe to the location. The closest launch point is Bishop's Harbor. Please be aware that the water is shallow going in to Hole, so you may want to check the tides, or you may be pulling your Kayak. The channels leading into the Hole are beautiful mangrove tunnels (esp. Access Points 1 and 3). If you need to pull the kayak, wear shoes. My son managed to cut his feet on oyster shells. There is a lovely beach on the Tampa Bay at N 27 36.384 W082 34.629. Its a great place for a picnic, and overlooks Tampa Bay and the Skyway Bridge. I plan on placing a cache there soon, and more along the way to Moses Hole. We saw loads of birds, fish, dolphins, crabs...on the paddle out. Bishop's Harbor was orginally going to be developed, but it went bankrupt and was bought to become part of Terr Ceia Preserve State Park. The area is largely a mangrove-dominated area of southwestern Tampa Bay that is punctuated with shallow sinkholes created in underlying sandy dolomite and limestone. One of the largest sinkholes, Moses Hole, is located very close to the shore on Mariposa Point, and appears to be free from extensive historical influence. Although isolated from open bay waters, it clearly has been flushed by marine waters through a natural channel and later from two man-made channels dug as part of the state mosquito control effort.
