Geocache Description:

The cache is a medium sized lock and lock box covered in black duct tape and wrapped in a waterproof camo bag. There is room for the log, a pen, smaller sized swap items and travel bugs. Route to cache can be very muddy underfoot after rain and there are a few large granite stiles to cross. Suggest a good pair of walking boots or similar.

This site consists of a Methodist chapel ruin, which was built along the Zennor churchway.

Although named the 'churchway', the route has no significant relation with the sites of the local parish churches - although the route passes near the walls of some larger examples, and near the remnants of this small chapel.

There are many Cornish crosses which mark the churchway route along its length. It is also believed that there is some connection in the area to the older Cornish Pagan religions, including an area known as 'Wicca', a name connected with witchcraft.

With the other religious buildings sitting on the edges of this trail, it is almost as if Christianity avoided building their churches on the spiritual churchway path. Even though, in all cases their sites are not more than a few hundred metres from it. John Wesley (a famous local preacher) is believed to have taught, guided, and lodged at places directly on the churchway line. Hence the name of the cache. :)

This is the most curious example of a chapel which was erected along this Churchway. It was built on the boundary between two farms with no other lane or road access leading to it, other than the Churchway path. It now stands roofless within a picturesque tree lined grove.>

No need to search the ruin site, the cache is not hidden in any part of the building structure.

Please be aware that the ruin is potentially hazardous, although it is still possible to enter the main site of the chapel.

Please be aware of loose farm animals en-route to the cache site.

See also the Church Micro Statistics and Home pages for further information about the series.

NB:- The tree over the main entrance has now collapsed (see photo) - this has made reaching the cache a little more difficult. It is still there and still attainable. This will involve either going round the far side of the church, or clambering over the tree. The D / T has been updated to reflect this.
